From the Ancient Celtic tradition we have been given the beautiful legacy of the “Anam Cara” or “Soul Friend”. A predecessor of our modern disciplines of psychology, counseling and spiritual direction – A Soul Friend is someone who accompanies the seeker or pilgrim on her or his journey towards the Beloved.
As a therapist I merge spiritual inquiry and psychology on the path of healing and transformation. This merging I call Soulfriending, honoring Celtic and indigenous wisdom.
Your invitation is towards renewal. Whether you choose to use expressive arts or dream exploration, there is an opportunity for you to be deeply listened to. Most people who meet with me are in a transformational stage in their life. They understand that the events in their lives reflect a purpose, however hidden. There is an alchemical process that happens in therapy, like spinning straw into gold, where one begins to transform suffering into wisdom.
Last Spring I visited the West Coast of Ireland where I spent time with people who knew and loved John O’Donahue, (1954-2008). He was an Irish poet, philosopher and Catholic scholar and author of the book entitled “Anamcara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom”. He wrote:
“We should not force ourselves to change by hammering our lives into any predetermined shape. We do not need to operate according to the idea of a predetermined program, plan or goals for our lives. Instead, we need to practice an art of attention to the inner rhythm of our days and lives, which will bring a new awareness of our own human and divine presence.”
Celtic Psychology includes abundant blessing, the recognition of mystical experiences, poetry and Beauty, and honoring the land as sacred and feminine. In Ireland, ancient sacred wells are still used today for sacred prayers. Water is understood as the life force of the Divine. These holy places are known as the entrance to the womb of the Divine, by Catholics and Druids alike. A Soulfriend will guide you there. There is a safe place to enter into darkness or to celebrate a new beginning. Everywhere there are thresholds, opportunities enter into a new relationship with yourself and Presence.
I am committed to acknowledging the thresholds of our lives, blessing the sacredness of everyday living. I bring this into my daily work with everyone I work with.
Many Blessings,
Kristy Hellum
